This one-and-a half-day hands-on intensive class is aimed at demystifying glazes and glaze technology.
Making your own glazes can seem overly complicated, layered in chemistry and maths – the aim of this course is to show that glazes can be simple to make and cheaper than buying premade commercial options.
We’ll learn about raw materials, glaze chemistry and how to read glaze formulas. Participants will learn how to mix and test glazes, understand colour and surface quality, learn different glazing application methods and how heat, temperature, and firing affect glaze outcomes.
Glaze safety and OH&S studio best practice will be a focus in this course.
Students will also be introduced to kiln loading and basic kiln firing.
All students will receive a course handbook featuring glaze recipes, practical tips, and further resources.
This course is designed for teachers who are establishing a ceramics or science program, high school students who want to develop their knowledge of glazes, and artists who wants to deepen their knowledge and practice in their home studios.
What to bring: pen and note pads, calculator, and a P2 disposable dust mask (or higher)
Course dates Sat 21st February 1pm-4pm and Sunday 22nd February 10am-4pm
Course cost $350, which includes all materials and equipment. Light lunch provided on Sunday.
